A power lawn edger uses a vertical spinning blade to cut a clean separation between grass and hard surfaces. The Lawnmaster 21V cordless edger manual explains that the machine is designed for use along sidewalks, driveways, flower beds, curbs, and similar areas. Husqvarna’s edger attachment operator’s manual states that the tool is only intended for cutting the edges of lawns.
What a Power Lawn Edger Does
According to the Lawnmaster manual, the edger’s blade cuts a vertical edge, trimming grass that overhangs pavement or garden beds. The Husqvarna manual confirms that the machine is designed solely for lawn edging. Both tools rely on a rotating blade that slices into the soil alongside hard surfaces, creating a neat border. The Lawnmaster 21V model has a 250 mm blade length and can cut to a depth between 37 mm and 52 mm. Its telescopic shaft adjusts from 1100 mm to 1500 mm, and the tool weighs 4.2 kg without the battery. The battery provides 15 to 25 minutes of runtime and takes 2.5 hours to charge fully. These specifications are specific to that model; other power edgers will have different dimensions and capabilities, so always check your own manual. For a broader look at the category, see our power edgers page.
Safety Gear and Personal Protection
Both the Lawnmaster and Husqvarna manuals stress the importance of personal protective equipment. The Lawnmaster manual says to always wear safety goggles or safety glasses with side shields, non-slip heavy-duty gloves, and non-skid protective footwear. It also recommends hearing protection and, depending on conditions, a dust mask or hard hat. Husqvarna’s manual similarly requires approved eye protection, ear protection, anti-slip and stable boots, and a protective helmet where there is a risk of falling objects.
Husqvarna adds that you should wear working clothes and heavy-duty long trousers, never loose clothing or jewellery, and tie back long hair. The Lawnmaster manual warns against operating the edger with bare feet and advises against short trousers. Both manuals agree: keep hands and feet away from the blade, and never let familiarity lead to complacency. If you are new to power tools, our edging tools section covers the basics of each type.
Preparing the Work Area
Before starting, inspect the area and remove objects that could be thrown or wrap around the blade. The Lawnmaster manual instructs users to clear wires, sticks, stones, and debris. Husqvarna’s manual says to remove stones, broken glass, nails, steel wire, string, and anything that can be thrown or entangle the blade. Both manuals require a safety zone of 15 meters (50 feet) around the operator. No bystanders, children, or pets should be within that radius. If anyone enters the zone, stop the machine immediately.
Husqvarna also advises against working in bad weather such as thick fog, heavy rain, strong winds, or extreme cold, as these conditions can make surfaces slippery and increase fatigue. The Lawnmaster manual says to avoid wet grass for safety and optimal performance, and to operate only in daylight or good artificial light.
Setting Up Your Edger
Always remove the battery or disconnect the spark plug before adjusting or inspecting the tool. The Lawnmaster edger features a telescopic shaft: open the locking lever, slide the lower shaft to the desired length, then close the lever. The front handle angle is adjustable by pressing the adjusting button and setting it to a comfortable position. Husqvarna’s edger attachment requires assembling the angle gear onto the supporting tube, aligning the slot with the line on the tube, and tightening the screw firmly.
Blade installation must be done carefully. The Lawnmaster manual describes removing the battery, locking the blade shaft with an Allen key or screwdriver inserted into the locking hole, and loosening the left-hand threaded flange nut. The new blade sits flat on the inner flange, and the outer flange must be installed so that only its outer ring touches the blade. Husqvarna’s manual outlines a similar process: fit the drive disc, block blade rotation with a locking pin, place the blade, support flange (outer edge against the blade), and locknut. The locknut has left-hand threads and must be tightened to 35 to 50 Nm. Never forget to remove the locking pin before starting.
Check the blade and blade guard for cracks or damage before each use. Husqvarna warns that a cracked support flange must be discarded, and the guard must be replaced if it has been impacted or cracked. The Lawnmaster manual says to ensure all safety guards, handles, and triggers work correctly; if any component fails, stop using the tool and have it repaired. Operating the Edger Safely
Hold the edger with both hands: the Lawnmaster manual specifies the right hand on the rear handle and left hand on the front handle. Husqvarna says to hold the machine on the right side of your body. Keep a firm footing and walk, never run. The Lawnmaster manual advises cutting at a steady pace; if the blade begins to bog down, you are moving too fast, so slow down. Do not force the blade into the ground.
Husqvarna’s gas-powered attachment should be run at full throttle when cutting, then dropped to idle after each pass to avoid engine damage from prolonged no-load high speed. Always keep the blade close to the ground. When pulling the edger toward you, be especially careful. Both manuals warn that the blade continues to rotate after the trigger is released or the engine stops; wait until it stops completely before moving the tool across non-grassy surfaces or setting it down.
If heavy vibrations occur, stop and inspect the machine. Husqvarna says to remove the spark plug cable and check for damage. The Lawnmaster manual notes that its battery has overload protection: if the tool stops, it may be due to excessive current draw or high temperature; release the trigger, allow cooling, and resume.
Maintenance and Storage
After each use, clean the edger. The Lawnmaster manual recommends cleaning the unit and storing it in a location where the temperature stays between 0°C and 40°C. Remove the battery before cleaning or servicing. Husqvarna says to clean grass and stones from the blade guard and blade, always with the engine stopped. The angle gear on the Husqvarna attachment is factory-filled with grease to 3/4; check it before first use and top up with Husqvarna special grease if needed. Normally, the grease does not require changing except during repairs.
Inspect the blade regularly for wear or damage. The Lawnmaster manual advises replacing worn parts in sets to maintain balance and using only manufacturer-recommended parts. Husqvarna’s locking nut should be replaced after being put on approximately 10 times, and its nylon lock must hold at least 1.5 Nm of torque. Always store the machine out of reach of children. For any digging associated with installing permanent edging materials, remember that underground utilities may be present. Contact your local utility locating service a few business days before you dig. The 811 service says every digging project, regardless of depth, calls for contacting 811 first. Frequently asked questions
How deep should I set the cutting depth?
The Lawnmaster 21V model adjusts between 37 mm and 52 mm. Your own tool’s manual will specify the recommended range. Start with a shallower setting and increase gradually if needed, always keeping the blade close to the ground as Husqvarna advises.
Can I use a power edger on wet grass?
The Lawnmaster manual advises against operating on wet grass to ensure safety and optimal performance. Husqvarna also cautions that bad weather, including heavy rain, can create slippery surfaces and dangerous conditions.
How do I know when to replace the blade?
Both manuals instruct you to check the blade for cracks or damage before each use. Husqvarna says to replace the blade or blade guard if it has been exposed to impact or is cracked. The Lawnmaster manual recommends replacing worn parts in sets to maintain balance and using only manufacturer-recommended parts.
